I don't know how people can rave about how good an oil filter is unless they actualy took their used oil to a lab and scrutinized it under a microscope. You'd really have to do the same with all the bearings and friction surfaces in your engine after having run it for n,000 miles. And you'd have to do a control experiment with a cheapo brand of filter over the same period with the same type of engine, oil and driving conditions - impractical for the layman.
What I do know is what I can see - that the filter canister feels more solid than cheaper filters I've used. Peering inside, it looks like it's built to a high quality - lots of shiny metal parts. I tested the anti-drainback valve by trying to blow air through the center hole - I couldnt, which is more than can be said for some cheap brands I've tried in the past. Also, the hex nut on the bottom will come in handy for removal. Having said that, I took the old filter off by hand. I have a chain wrench but didn't need to use it. The heavy duty nature and safety strap hole in the cap might be useful for rally use, but that's not me.
I will continue to use K&N oil filters, because buying one of these from Amazon and 5 quarts of synthetic oil from Wal*mart is still half the price of getting Jiffy Lube to do it, and I won't overfill my engine to the tune of 1 extra gallon of oil like they did. It's not funny looking in your rear view mirror and seeing a big cloud of blue smoke!
