I chose the Time sert over helicoil because I read reviews/reports of helicoils sometimes coming out. The timesert works by being locked at the top and at the bottom. By different principles. The top is actually a flange collar. The kit comes with everything you need. There are great instructional videos. There is just 1 thing that is not mentioned that will help. I'll come to that.
There are few things that I was not thrilled about. But it might be a non issue for you.
The bit and counter bore shaft both have 1/2" driver heads. Every tap handle I saw at Sears and Lowes could only accommodate upto 1/4" heads into their jaws. I finally used a ratchet. It took a few mins but it was not too hard as I was fighting aluminium.
The actual tap is 1/4". At least in my kit. This was good because you really need to be careful threading it. It is best done by hand. Now they give you a small tap collar guide. This is nice as it helps you get perpendicular and flushed with the surface ensuring a straight bore. You MUST oil the tap and they put stickers to indicate the same so you don't screw up. You could prob do it without the oil. I would not.
You get 5 carbon steel inserts. When you use the counter bore, it creates a slight well into which the flange collar seats perfectly and helps you get it flush with the mounting surface. This is what prevents it from going further down. But what prevents it from coming out/up. The last 3 threads. They are cold rolled. They get finalized and flushed/mated with the (last 3) threads at the bottom you just tapped. Now here is what you have to do that is not clearly shown. You need to use the installation driver and have it come out by approx 1 cm or less. The instructions appear to indicate you should stop when there is no resistance and then unwind it. Don't do that. The driver needs to come out a little bit because you need those 3 threads to be pressed out.
If they included the T handle, it would have been a 5 star review.
I recommend you also use Red Loctite. They say it can be used without an issue.
