Briggs & Stratton 40248 7000-Watt PowerNow Dual Mode Air Cooled Home Standby Generator Review

I purchased this generator in August of 2008. I live in an area (upstate NY) where we lose power frequently. The item arrived and was delivered to my back yard in perfect working order.
We recently had a very bad ice storm in the Northeast and we lost power for 3 days. The generator worked perfectly running my sump pump, hot water heater (gas, direct vent), furnace, fridge (2) and several lights. I had to run power cords from outside rather than use the NEMA power cord to a manual transfer switch I had installed before the generator was delivered (more on that later). I ran the house for 10-12 hours on the 2 20lb propane tanks before I needed to change them out, which was to me, excellent. The generator is very quiet, we could barely hear it in the house. I have it installed behind my garage facing downwind of the house.
Okay, the transfer switch issue. While the manual, Briggs & Stratton web site, Briggs & Stratton FAQ page does not specifically state this, you MUST purchase the B&S manual transfer switch PERIOD! The model number is Briggs & Stratton 71014 - PowerNow Generator Transfer Kit (10 Circuits). This is the only transfer switch that works with the GFCI breaker installed in the generator. I had 3 electricians (friends of mine) look at the gen-tran 30 amp transfer switch wiring that was installed in my house and it is NOT a switching neutral switch.
Confused? I was too until I got on the phone with a very nice B&S technician who told me to only use their switch. I was dissapointed as I then needed to shell out another $400.00 but now it's working fine. I did let B&S know that they should be specific about the fact that only their switch is compatible with these types of generators. It is because of this fact that I only rated it 4 stars.
All in all that one storm alone made this purchase worth every penny. It also kept the house in harmony (if you know what I mean).
I would heartly recommend this generator to anyone who is looking for a well built powerful and quiet standby generator. Just make sure you buy the 71014 - PowerNow Generator Transfer Kit from B&S

I've had it for 4-5 years. Power went out during Ike. Generator was on for more than a week and suddenly stopped. It was low on oil.
As soon as I added oil, it started again (a little to soon, I got splattered) I change to oil and filters myself. I save about $200 of the $250 charge from Generac.

Coleman Powermate ProForce 6,000 Watt 12 HP Portable Generator PM0106000 Review

Coleman Powermate ProForce 6,000 Watt 12 HP Portable Generator PM0106000
Average Reviews:

I purchased the Powermate ProForce 6000 generator. A few week ago there was a major flood in our area with an extended power out. I opened the box and set up the generator. In the midst of chaos, one of the wheels would not hold air because there was a hole in the side wall. I put a can of the QuickFix in the tire, it still would not hold the air. I had to put the generator on 2x4's and concrete blocks to get it going. The vibration produced by the generator due to the lack of a wheel was horrible. The crisis is over now and we got our power back. I have been trying to reach the customer support line (800-445-1805) for 2 weeks now but a recording said that there is no attendant to help; and then they cut you off with silence. If you really want to buy this, try calling their 800 number first and see. I went to the Powermate site and emailed them for a replacement part, there has been no reply either. It felt like the compamy has gone under. The generator seems to run fine but if you need help - you are on your own. I wish I got the Homelite 6,000 Watt 13 HP OHV Portable Generator #HG6000 instead - at a better price and MTD usually has good customer service.
Update on incidence: Finally, I contacted Amazon, I was told by Amazon customer service that Coleman/Powermate did go out on the generator line of products just 2 weeks before I contacted Coleman/Powermate for assistance and their warranty fulfillment. I am surprised that they could simply dropped all the generator customers and industrial responsibility like that. Amazon, on the other hand, offered to pay for the costs for me to purchase the replacement aftermarket tires. Amazon should receive a 5-star on their customer support.
2009 update: The generator was used twice for 2 weeks and now is totally dead.

Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start Review

Generac 5735 GP17500E 26,250 Watt 992cc OHV Portable Gas Powered Generator With Electric Start

The generator was easy to assemble, started right up after filling oil reservoir and fueling. I haven't had a power outage yet since getting this generator (go figure). The only drawback I've seen (so far) is the information provided on the available plug receptacles is rather weak. The 50 amp plug is located underneath the panel face where all the other plug receptacles are located. It has a wire "latch hook" to keep the plug from falling out, but no info on how to properly use it. I had difficuly locating the correct male plug with a "straight" out feature since most are 90 degrees. It would have been nice to have the male plug-end supplied with the generator. I finally found one at Grainger (cost over one hundred bucks, but it's top notch). Although the muffler assembly is impressive looking, it's not quite as quiet as I expected.

Featuring a compact, wheeled frame for easy transport, the Generac 17,500-Watt Portable Gas-Powered Generator with Electric Start provides a reliable power supply wherever you need it. A Generac OHVI (overhead valve industrial) engine delivers performance and power, while a sturdy steel-tube cradle protects the generator's exterior. For safe and comfortable use, the circuit-breaker outlets prevent power overloads, and the low-tone muffler makes for ultra quiet operation.
(Note for California residents: This model is not CARB-compliant (units sold to California must be CARB-compliant) or CSA-certified.)
A Durable Power Supply Wherever You Need It The Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start is an ideal portable generator to have at home, on the job site, or wherever you need power. Its compact frame--48.5 x 31 x 39.5 inches (LxWxH)--is fitted with lifting eye handles and pneumatic, all-terrain wheels for easy portability. And with its hardened steel-tube cradle, this rugged generator holds up well for frequent travel, allowing you to look forward to years of operation. Plus, this model features an electric ignition for fast, easy start-up.
Thanks to its versatile design, this generator adds comfort and possibility to any situation. Use it to keep your family safe through unexpected blackouts or make construction jobs faster and easier.
A Low-Maintenance, High-Performance OHVI Engine Designed specifically for generators, the Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start's heavy-duty 992-cc OHVI (overhead valve industrial) engine boasts a host of features. An exclusive X-Torq governor maximizes the engine's performance to keep it running without stalls. And so engine components continue moving smoothly, a pressurized lubrication system sends oil directly to critical areas.
Thanks to this full-pressure lubrication system, the engine can employ an automotive-grade, spin-on oil filter that sifts out dirt and other unwanted substances. The oil filter works alongside a dual-element air filter. Together, the two keep engine performance at a maximum and maintenance at a minimum.
Plus, this generator's sturdy, 16-gallon resin tank ensures a full 10 hours of operation at a 50-percent load, letting you relax for hours of use. The automatic-idle control reduces fuel usage and noise, while the tank's built-in fuel gauge lets you monitor fuel levels at a glance. Generac even provides you with your first supply of oil.
Plenty of Wattage to Run a Full Range of Appliances The most heavy-duty of Generac's GP model generators, the Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start supplies 17,500 output watts and 26,250 maximum watts (for start-up of devices). It has an A/C voltage of 120/240 and a frequency of 60 hertz.
For unexpected blackouts, this is enough wattage to run home appliances such as security systems, computers, and electric stoves, as well as air conditioning systems and sump pumps. (A manual transfer switch is required to connect to air conditioning systems.) For construction and landscaping applications, it's enough to support large devices such as lawn mowers, belt sanders, and table saws. And for camping and outdoor events, it can run portable stereos, outdoor lights, and electric grills.
(Note: All appliances should be checked for actual wattage ratings.)
Safe, Quiet Operation with Overload-Protected Outlets If security and quiet operation are important to you in a generator, then the Generac 17,500-Watt Generator with Electric Start is an ideal choice. Its outlets (two 120-volt, two 120-volt GFCI, one 120-volt 30 Amp twist lock, one 120/240-volt 50 Amp, and one 12 VDC battery charger) are circuit-breaker protected, guarding against power overloads and allowing the generator to smoothly send power to your appliances. And the low-tone muffler means the generator runs at a comfortable noise level that easily blends into the background.
This generator is backed by a two-year limited warranty.
What's in the Box Generac 5735 GP Series GP17500E 17,500-Watt 992-cc OHVI Portable Gas-Powered Generator with Electric Start (Non-CARB Compliant), 12VDC 365-CCA battery, first oil supply, wheel kit, maintenance kit, and manual.

Briggs & Stratton 6030 Standby Generator Cold Weather Kit Review

Briggs and Stratton 6030 Standby Generator Cold Weather Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This cold weather kit is rather expensive, but it does the job. When it first arrived and I saw what it was I was in shock. "I paid almost $200.00 for this?" I had my electrician buddy install it, even though it could be easily done by anyone that can read directions and connect a couple of snap in plugs. We had many nights of sub-zero temps and when I checked the block and battery they were noticeably warmer than the rest of the unit. I started the generator and it turned over flawlessly. I had already spent over $200.00 on the battery and with the temps we get around here I did not want to keep replacing frozen batteries at that price. I would recommend this cold weather kit to anyone in the same situation. It really does do the job as advertised.
